1915年，第一次世界大戰中，加利普里戰役是盟軍慘敗的一場戰役，卻有無數澳洲人參予和犧牲。導演藉這場戰役寫一個少年夢，阿奇里是一個理想主義者，他本來是運動場的跑手，為了伸張正義參戰，便把體育精神也帶到戰場上。他拒絕在戰場上充當微不足道的跑腿，寧愿跳出戰壕與敵軍交鋒，明知上級頒下荒謬的命令，仍然忠心耿耿地執行。他的好友法蘭是一個浪子，喜歡在運動場上作弊，來到軍營也是玩世不恭，等到他真正沾染戰爭的氣氛，也逐漸收起輕佻態度。電影從澳洲西部的牧場開始，發展到開羅的訓練軍營，最后在土耳其的戰場結束。戰場上的軍官求勝心切，明知下屬被敵軍的機關槍瞄準，仍然迫令他們沖鋒陷陣，結果一敗涂地。兩個年青人一心為社會服務，結果一個要賠上性命換取經驗，留下好友在旁邊狂號，驚見理想幻滅。
