電影由漢中何振基創作的長篇小說《母親河》改編而成，以小見大，通過“母親河”漢江邊上陽壩村里的幾個年輕人的生活情感、迷惘挫折、成長的歷程，展現了陜南人民在面對困難、貧窮時，在美麗鄉村發展建設奔向富裕的過程中，改造自然并與自然環境和諧共生，進行可持續發展的艱苦卓絕的奮斗。
