林河市公安局局長秘書蘇巖未經領導許可參加了一個競賽類電視節目，并與搭檔張秋燕贏得冠軍。然而張秋燕卻于當晚被人謀殺在家中，現場留下神秘的“黑螞蟻”。蘇巖因而成為嫌疑人，他主動請纓加入刑警隊。蘇巖結識了死者張秋燕的表姐孫紅。孫紅和報社編輯薛成正在談戀愛，而薛成是蘇巖在文學方面的筆友兼老師。薛成的姨夫又是孫紅的上司。當警方尋找罪犯的時候，新的命案又接連發生，死者都跟孫紅有關。而且兇手每次作案后都要拿走一張小額存折并在現場留下黑螞蟻！
