1912年，向警予在省立第一女子師范求學,畢業后回家鄉創辦溆浦女校。后向警予赴法勤工儉學，與蔡和森結成“向蔡同盟”。1921年向警予回國，在黨的二大上，當選為中央委員和第一任婦女部長，在黨的三大上當選中央政治局委員。隨后向警予擔任了國民黨中央婦女運動委員會書記。1925年，向警予領導和組織了震驚中外的五卅運動，大革命失敗后向警予堅持留在武漢，挑起了中共湖北省委的重擔。1928年，向警予被法國巡捕房抓捕。同年5月1日壯烈犧牲，年僅32歲。
