在日本留學多年的李叔同（濮存昕 飾）終于回到了魂牽夢繞的祖國，當時正值辛亥革命成功，他為共和歡呼，并出仼《太平洋報》副刊主編，憧憬國家美好未來。好景不長，沒過多久國家陷入軍閥混戰，李叔同也從穿洋裝的主編轉變為懦雅的布衣君子，以教授書畫為業。其間，培養了豐子愷（尹治 飾） 、劉質平（胡光子 飾）等一批日后的藝術名家。此時的李叔同對佛學產生濃厚興趣，遁入空門，法號弘一。閩南佛學院太虛院長（劉偉明 飾）與弘一法師都有宏大的志愿，雖門派不同，最終卻殊途同歸。抗戰爆發后，身患重病的弘一法師仍堅持抗日救亡運動，并譜寫救亡歌曲鼓舞士氣，1942年10月13日，一代大師駕鶴西去......
