本片改編自著名棒球手Jackie Robinson的事跡。他出生于1919年01月31日，1972年10月24日逝世，是美國職棒大聯盟史上第一位黑人球員。1947年04月15日，他穿著42號球衣以先發一壘手的身分於布魯克林道奇隊登場比賽前，黑人球員只允許在自己的黑人聯盟（Negro Leagues）打球。雖然當時美國奴隸制度已廢除已久，但仍有許多地區依然實行種族隔離政策，無所不在的種族偏見仍強烈左右著社會各個階層，因此Robinson踏上大聯盟舞臺的這一天，被公認為美國近代民權運動史上最重要的事件之一。
